Being that carrying a baby for nine months is no walk in the park, expectant mothers can't be blamed for being stressed during their pregnancies. However, if they want to have a boy, they'd better calm down. A new study reveals pregnant women who are under a lot of stress are more likely to give birth to a girl. "The womb is an influential first home, as important as the one a child is raised in, if not more so," says Columbia University's Catherine Monk, the study's lead author. "Other researchers have seen this pattern after social upheavals, such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, after which the relative number of male births decreased." According to the study, expectant mothers who don't receive social support from loved ones during their pregnancies have a much stronger chance of giving birth to girls.
