The 5 Kinds of People You'll Meet During a Night Out in Portsmouth

When going out in the Port City this fine summer, you are bound to notice that not everyone is what they seem. From old to new, and tourists to locals everyone gathers on the decks and throughout the streets of Downtown to grab drinks all summer long, and these are their stories.

THE 5 KINDS OF PEOPLE YOU'LL MEET DURING A NIGHT OUT IN PORTSMOUTH

The College Student Back For The Summer

Running into these creatures is a very common occurance. If they are not working at whichever Bar, Restaurant, or Spot your at, then they're probably stumbling around outside of it. Traits include being a little too drunk, and a sense of self worth only obtained by not working a day in your life and having mom and dad take care of your student loans. They are a fun bunch though, and if you find the right group, you could be in for the time of your life. Can often be heard wandering into the Gas Light screaming "I just want to dance!"

PLACES MOST COMMONLY FOUND:

Gaslight, Thirsty Moose, Lazy Jacks, TJ's

The Old Timer

They have 30 years of Portsmouth in their blood, they remember when Yoken's was open, and Gilley's was pulled by a horse. They've come out for a quick drink at the end of a long week and dread the fact that either a tourist or college student may wander into their local establishment. They tend to avoid downtown and the decks like the plague, but pull up a barstool next to them one night and your bound to hear stories you wish you could forget

PLACES COMMONLY FOUND:

Statey, Bratskellar, Mojos, Rusty Hammer

The Tourist

They have come to our beautiful city to take in all that is Portsmouth. They're struggling trying to take instagram selfies with the tugboats, and stop every 15 feet in Market Square to take pictures of the church. They don't realize that almost everyone around them doesn't want them to be there, but we do appreciate their patronage. Some can be fun, or some could be complaining about how much better Portland and Boston are. We just give them the decks for the summer and hope they don't wander into town. They're usually in bed by 10 anyway.

PLACES COMMONLY FOUND:

Martingale Wharf, Pocos, Riverhouse, Ferry Landing

The Portsmouth Hipster

They brought their own homemade organic kombucha to the bar and keep asking everyone to try it. Their handlebar mustache is one only envied by the guy on the Pringles can, and they're shocked that the bar doesn't carry their Rosemary Ivry Southcoast Pidgeontoe IPA. Their jeans had holes in them when they bought them and they refer to the West End as the "Brooklyn of Portsmouth". They tend to stay away from downtown, instead to drink their trendy meads in their studio apartments, but their is no doubt when you wake up and wander around looking for the best cup of coffee in town they can point you in the right direction.

PLACES COMMONLY FOUND:

Liars Bench, Loaded Question, Earth Eagle, Flatbread Pizza Co.

The Rich Guy or Gal

They work in Boston and lives in Portsmouth at their "summer house". They spent his weekend golfing and playing tennis with their business partners at the Wentworth and ended it with a dinner that cost more than my salary at the 100 Club. He's the guy buying your girlfriend drinks at the bar and talking about his boat like it's his first born child. When they do go out, they do it big. If your looking for free drinks, or a boat ride, seek one of these out and you'll have yourself a key to the city.

PLACES COMMONLY FOUND:

Martingale Wharf, 100 Club, Somewhere you can't afford

With a boom of people and some of the most gorgeous sights and weather around, Portsmouth is a great place to spend your summer. While all the kinds of people listed above may sound unbearable, believe me, they are what makes Portsmouth one of the greatest small cities in this country. So grab a drink on the deck and a good meal in town and celebrate my friends! Its officially summer in Portsmouth!
