Angelina Jolie Admits She Felt 'Pretty Broken' After Brad Pitt Split

It's been three years since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie split. While they avoided discussing their divorce in its immediate aftermath, they're both busy promoting new films and spilling some tea in the process. During an interview for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Jolie admitted she felt "pretty broken" following her breakup.

ā€œIt was a tough time,ā€ Jolie told People of returning to the character of Maleficent after her split. ā€œIā€™d been coming off a few years of difficulty, and I was not feeling very strong. In fact, I was feeling pretty broken. It took me a moment to feel the strength of [Maleficent] again.ā€

Pitt has also opened up about returning to acting after his very public divorce from Jolie. The actor spoke about how he was drawn to his new film Ad Astra because it helped him explore what went wrong with his relationship. ā€œI would be exploring it whether there was a script that allowed that or not,ā€ he said. ā€œA breakup of a family is certainly an eye-opener that as one ā€” and Iā€™m speaking in general again ā€” but as one needs to understand, I had to understand my own culpability in that, and what can I do better. Because I donā€™t want to go on like this.ā€

He also told the New York Times about channeling the turmoil of his personal life for his character in Ad Astra. He reportedly committed to the role only a few months after Jolie filed for divorce. "I had family stuff going on. We'll leave it at that," Pitt said. "The fact is, we all carry pain, grief and loss. We spend most of our time hiding it, but it's there, it's in you. So you open up those boxes."

Though Pitt and Jolie have been declared legally single, their divorce proceedings are ongoing. The former couple reportedly can't figure out how to divvy up their French castle.
