It took a lot of help from the man upstairs to keep Ciara and Russell Wilson's hands off each other before they tied the knot.
During her cover interview for the April issue of InStyle, the "Level Up" singer got real about her and her husband's premarital sex life, explaining that it was non-existent. Citing religious reasons, Ciara said she and Russell abstained from premarital sex during their courtship, a challenge she said "took a lot of prayer."
"It was hard. I canât lie," she added.
The mom-of-two previously opened up about their decision to wait for marriage to have sex, telling Cosmo South Africa in January 2017 they were focused on building a friendship first. "I really believe that when you focus on a friendship, you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship," she explained. "Once you know youâre really great friends and youâre what we call âequally yoked,â where you share the same values or the same outlook on life, it kind of sets the tone... You shouldnât feel like you have to give your body away to get someone to like you."
"I have to give credit to my husband for sharing those views," she continued. "Itâs awesome how it all worked out."
The 33-year-old singer additionally discussed how she dealt with her 2014 split from Future, the father of her four-year-old son and whom she was engaged to before Russell. "If you want to get somewhere in life, youâve got to have a compass. Youâve got to know where you really want to get to. And my heart, soul, spirit, and mind just desired to be loved. To be truly loved the right way," she said. Adding that finding out what she wanted was just as important as discovering what she no longer could put up with. "I knew I didnât want to cry tears of hurt anymore," Ciara admitted. "I didnât want to keep going around in circles."
