2018 Emmys: John Legend, Ricky Martin & More Sing About The Diversity Issue

The 2018 Emmy Awards on Monday (September 17) brought all kinds of topics to the table, but the most prominent of the bunch was the obvious: Hollywood's issue with diversity. To emphasize the theme, they rounded up a batch of performers of different ethnicities like John Legend, Ricky Martin, RuPaul, Kristen Bell and more to, well, sing about it.

For the almost-six-minute opening number called "We Solved It," Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson kicked off the cheeky jazz song, arguing that the Emmys have solved the issue of inclusion. Much like they've done in the past, the number escalated into a group affair when they were joined by Kristen Bell and Titus Burgess, who broad some Broadway magic to the scene. Throw in Sterling K. Brown, Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, the first Asian woman to score a lead actress Emmy nomination, and you had a touch of everyone. However, Samberg was quick to inform the crowd they had, unfortunately, not "solved it" the diversity issue as much as they thought they had.

Still, it wouldn't have felt like a true musical number unless the most buzzed about R&B singer of the night was involved. At the end of the performance, a dance routine from the "One of Each" dancers and newly-crowned EGOT winner Legend took to the Microsoft Theaterstage to wrap up the number.Ā
