Loon Kills Bald Eagle By Stabbing It Through Heart

The mystery surrounding a bald eagle that was found dead last year in Maine has been solved. The endangered bird, which was found floating face-down in Brigdton's Highland Lake in July 2019, died after being stabbed through the heart by a loon, Danielle D'Auria, a biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, revealed Thursday.

Autopsy results reveal the bald eagle had a puncture wound in its heart that matches the average size of a loon's beak, D'Auria says. She says the victim likely died "a quick death." A dead loon chick was also discovered near the eagle so perhaps this was a revenge killing.
