Since the Jonas Brothers’ disbandment in 2013, Nick Jonas went on to pursue a solo career and explore new musical territory. To prove his coming of age, the 21-year-old unveiled the avant-garde music video for his newest single “Chains” on Wednesday.

The edgy visual opens with the 21-year-old — simply dressed in a torn-up t-shirt — being dragged on his back in a rundown mansion while crooning the melancholy lyrics.

The video also includes a cinematic sequence of the Who I Am artist being chained down by a beautiful woman (Dylan Penn), free falling into the unknown, and forcing himself through a SWAT team to reach the model.

“The story behind ‘Chains’ is basically that feeling that all people can relate to, it’s being trapped,” he exclusively tells MTV. “For me specifically in this song, I connected to love and trust and for some people they have said it’s broader for them, it’s more than love, it can be about anything that entangles you in your life and doesn’t let you do what you need to do to feel free.”

“Chains,” which was produced by Jason Evigan, serves as the first single off his forthcoming debut solo album on Island Records. According to E! Online, the LP will feature a duet with good friend Demi Lovato, who enlisted Nick to be the musical and creative director during her Neon Lights tour.

“We did one for my record,” he tells E! Online. “It’s a great song that we both love. Her voice is just amazing on it. She’s the real deal. It’s the perfect fit for this record.”

He may also work with Zedd and Mike Posner. The three were spotted together partying until 3 a.m. in Las Vegas recently. Listen to the audio below for more details:
